From memories of his childhood in Shanghai, Peter Max created 'Sailboat East on Blends.' A Chinese 'junk' boat, what the artist calls a 'Zen Boat,' moves with full sail across a lake of reflections along a horizon of mountains. The subject and bold line work are reminiscent of the Japanese woodblock prints 'ukiyo-e,' meaning 'pictures of the floating world.'
The printing art forms are as important to Max as his painting process, and he has created works with many printing processes throughout his career. Max's signature, lush color blend gradients are featured in this piece. The artist juxtaposed an electric color blend frame around his composition with a lush color blend margin. Max's 'Zen Boat' sails in a state of calm attentiveness, in the artist's glorious colors, guided by intuition and in harmony with nature - the essence of Zen.
