In His Garden

Rare Vintage LithographĀ

1980

21.5" x 26"

One of 30 Artist's Proofs signed by Peter Max.Ā

Peter Max created and printed this vintage work almost half a century ago. This exquisite lithograph exemplifies the artist's transformation from his internationally-renown 'Cosmic Art' period of the 1960s to his softer drawing style that emerged in the 1970s.Ā

'In His Garden' depicts a rare composition for the artist. A robed sage, from memories of Max's childhood in Shanghai, peers to his garden, his sofa behind him and floral blooms cascading around him. It's a seamless transition from hearth to garden. The peaceful sage stands centered in both.Ā

The artist's signature bold, black lines have softened in this era - they are suggested not solid. Max's line work flows and his colors are now soft washes in subdued tones - earthy olive and sand, pale peach with bold notes of red and lime.Ā

This sublime work, one of only 30 Artist Proofs, holds grace and subtle beauty - an elegant exemplar of Max's exquisite work from this era.Ā
